Chancellor Merkel talks with AEMtec apprentices about technological progress in Europe

Apprentices from AEMtec complete the school side of their studies to become microsystem engineers at the Lise Meitner Sixth Form. A podium discussion was held here with students which went into the future sustainability of Europe. Our Federal Chancellor remarked that contributions had to be made towards strengthening technical progress in Europe to achieve this and she hoped that more young people would show a greater interest in technical professions. "We have to earn our money with something that others do not have...," said the Chancellor, meaning know-how in natural and engineering sciences. Dr. Merkel used the opportunity to find out for herself about progress in microsystem technology from the students at the Lise-Meitner School. In conversation with our apprentices, Patrick Dornburg and Virginia Leffke (see photos), she commented that AEMtec with its orientation towards the medical market and professional know-how as regards the latest technologies had the best prospects of being successful in these difficult times. Background to the EU Project Day: EU Project Day goes back to an initiative of the Chancellor's. It first took place in January 2007 at a time when Germany was taking up the Presidency of the EU. Members of the Federal Government, as well as Members of the German Federal Council and of the European Parliament visit schools on this day.
